The Römerbrücke combined heat and power plant can be seen from afar. Its special feature is a chimney more than 160 metres high, which has been shining in coloured lights in the dark since 2014. The enormously high chimney ensures that the pollutants discharged during the production of energy are released into the environment in as low a concentration as possible. Both the city and the Stadtwerke Saarbrücken were awarded the UN Environment Prize in 1992 for their innovative energy policy. The Römerbrücke combined heat and power plant generates district heating and electricity and is operated by gas and steam turbines. There are plans to supplement the CHP plant with a gas engine power plant to optimise energy production. The generation of electricity by means of renewable energies is also planned. For example, the façade is to be fitted with an elaborate photovoltaic system.
