Saarbrücken Castle is located in the district of Old Saarbrücken, not far from the Saar River, and is now a sought-after venue for events of all kinds, the seat of administrative offices and, of course, a place for a great deal of culture. The "Castellum Sarrabrucca" was first mentioned in documents before the turn of the first millennium in 999. What was initially a castle was converted into a palace in the Renaissance style from the 17th century onwards. As early as during the French Revolution in 1793, however, some parts of Saarbrücken Castle were destroyed. Again and again there were fires, reconstructions, destructions and renovations. In the meantime, a central building in the contemporary style of the late 1980s crowns the castle. It is made of glass and steel and connects the main wings of the castle. An exhibition on the history of the Saar region can be marvelled at in the casemates below.
