Saarkran

The Saar crane is one of Saarbrücken's most important baroque testimonies and reminds us of the heyday of the city's trade. In 1761, the crane was built by Friedrich Joachim Stengel. The Saar crane was in operation for a total of 90 years. From 1762 to 1852, it was used to load carts and wagons on land with goods delivered by Saar ships. At that time, the water level of the Saar was even lower than today, which is why the entrance was still at ground level. After it had been completely destroyed several times, the Saar Crane was reconstructed in 1989-1991 on exactly the same site as the old "Saar Crane". Of course, the wooden barrel hanging from the wooden T-boom and the golden eagle sitting on the top of the boom were not left out.
