In the Middle Ages, around 1322, today's St. Johann Market was the centre of the village of "St. Johann". It was surrounded by the city wall and a few streets. Its origins can be traced back to the typical street markets of the Middle Ages, which were gradually widened. The routes from Metz to Mainz and from Strasbourg to Trier crossed here, which ensured lively trade. At the beginning of the 16th century - in 1503 - St. Johanner Markt must have been completely destroyed by fire, according to tradition. Today there are restaurants, bistros, pubs and boutiques around St. Johanner Markt, inviting you to shop, linger and relax. St. Johanner Markt is the heart of life in Saarbrücken.
