Stiftskirche St. Arnual

The collegiate church of St. Arnual is mentioned in documents as a monastery as early as 1135. The monastery, which was used by Augustinian canons, was later used as a Protestant monastery. Today it is one of the most important architectural monuments in south-western Germany. The tombs of princes and counts of Nassau-Saarbrücken are a special attraction for the public. The French King Louis VII stopped here in 1147 with his crusaders and found refuge. Today's Ludwigsgymnasium emerged from a small Latin school, which is recorded in documents around 1223 and was maintained in the former monastery. The architect Friedrich Joachim Stengel renovated the collegiate church of St. Arnual during the 18th century, in the course of which the church was given a dome in the Baroque style.
