The Bergwerksdirektion in Saarbrücken's St. Johann district, which is now integrated into the "Europa-Galerie" shopping centre, was built around 1880 and from then on housed the respective central administration of the mines in the Saar coalfield. This began with the Royal Prussian Mining Treasury and ended with Saarbergwerke AG. The administration building was designed in neo-Renaissance style, reminiscent of the Florentines. During a shopping tour, you can admire original components of the mine administration building, which is now a listed building. These include the cast iron staircases, the floor made of historic tiles, a ballroom and the leaded glass windows. During the Second World War, the Bergwerksdirektion suffered immense damage, which resulted in the complete removal of the western wing. In the following years, this part of the directorate was restored in a simple form.
