Fröschengasse

After permission was granted in the second half of the 18th century to also add buildings directly to the city wall from the late Middle Ages, the Fröschengasse in Saarbrücken came into being. Here, houses of workers and craftsmen were built directly onto the city wall. The narrow alley winds in a quarter-circle turn around St. Johann's market square, because this is where the city wall originally ran. According to legend, frogs from the banks of the Saar River entered the town via this small alley. This is how it got its name "Fröschengasse". Today you will find numerous restaurants and boutiques here, inviting you to shop and socialise. Some of the old buildings are now listed monuments and may therefore not be altered, but must be preserved.
