Directly beneath Saarbrücken Castle and its no less impressive castle square, the former defensive fortifications offer a testimony to time that spans a total of 5 centuries. Excavations have uncovered parts of the castle from the Middle Ages, as well as shooting chambers and fortifications. To marvel at these contemporary witnesses and an 18th-century dungeon, you can go directly from the museum of today's castle 14 metres down into the underground castle complex with casemates. Since 2006, elaborately installed lighting systems and audio play modules have taken visitors back to the time when Saarbrücken Castle was still a medieval castle. This provides an insight into the everyday life of the castle's occupants.
